Renowned jockey Clifford Lee has emerged from a medically induced coma following a motorcycle mishap during his vacation.
Lee, aged 29, sustained a neck fracture after a head-first fall, leading to his immediate hospitalization. His boss, Karl Burke, anticipates a prolonged absence from racing for Lee, who had been enjoying a record-breaking year with 94 victories.
“He has awoken from the induced coma, which is a positive development,” Burke stated. “An operation to stabilize the fractures is necessary. He is resilient, and we hope for a successful surgery leading to his recovery.”
In a notable achievement in August, Lee clinched the Prix Morny at Deauville aboard juvenile filly Venetian Sun.
Throughout the summer, Lee secured significant wins on horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent.
Prior to the accident, Lee, who had won his last four races, was on a break in Greece before heading to Scotland with his family.
Expressing shock upon learning of the incident, Burke remarked, “I was unaware that he rode motorbikes. It’s a tragic event, but it could have been much worse.”
In 2025, Lee’s horses amassed a total of £2.3 million in winnings in Britain, with Al Qareem alone earning £237,857 from four victories.
Originating from south-east London, Lee, not born into a racing family, hails from a background where his father worked as a handyman and his mother as a cleaner.
His exceptional sense of pace was evident in consecutive victories at the Cambridgeshire, a fiercely competitive handicap race, riding Boiling Point and Liberty Lane trained by Burke.
Supportive messages have flooded in for Lee, who is currently hospitalized in Edinburgh. One well-wisher expressed, “Wishing Clifford Lee a speedy recovery; he has performed exceptionally this season, under Karl Burke’s guidance. A promising future awaits him.” Another message read, “Hoping Clifford Lee recovers swiftly from this peculiar accident.”
