Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson faced a shocking moment during the Mexico City Grand Prix when he had to slow down to avoid colliding with two marshals crossing the track. The incident occurred on the third lap of the race when the marshals, stationed at turn one, were alerted about debris on the track.
Despite being instructed to wait for all cars to pass before entering the track to clear the debris, the marshals were unaware that Lawson had already pitted for a front wing change due to damage sustained in the opening lap.
Upon exiting the pit lane and approaching the first corner, Lawson was surprised to see the two marshals running across the track in front of him. He expressed his shock over the radio and later received praise from his race engineer for successfully avoiding a potential catastrophe.
The FIA spokesperson stated that an investigation was underway to understand the sequence of events and the instructions given to the marshals in the lead-up to the incident. It was clarified that the deployment of marshals was canceled once it was known that Lawson had pitted, and caution flags were displayed in the area.
Lawson, who retired from the race due to damage, expressed his disbelief and concern over the dangerous situation he encountered. He emphasized the need for a thorough explanation and reassurance that such incidents would not repeat in the future.
The victorious driver of the race was Lando Norris from Britain, who now leads the championship with four rounds remaining, narrowly ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished fifth. Formula 1 enthusiasts can catch all the live action with Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, which includes access to various TV channels and complimentary subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.
Lawson and his Racing Bulls team are determined to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that safety protocols are strictly adhered to in future races.
