“Lidl Introduces Self-Scanning Feature to Cut Checkout Time”

Must Read

Lidl has introduced a new self-scanning feature on its loyalty app that aims to reduce checkout time for customers. This update allows shoppers to scan items with their mobile phones before finalizing their purchase at the counter. The feature was initially tested in a trial involving friends and family at four stores earlier this year, with plans for a wider rollout in the coming year.

The supermarket chain has filed a trademark for “Lidl & Go” in Europe and the UK, focusing on digital payment and scan-and-shop systems within its stores. Shyam Unarket, Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, highlighted the significance of integrating payment functionality into the Lidl Plus app, calling it a step forward in the company’s digital transformation. He emphasized Lidl’s commitment to investing in technologies that enhance the shopping experience and provide flexibility for customers, whether they prefer traditional checkouts or self-service options.

In related news, Lidl has been named the most affordable supermarket by Which? for the second time recently, surpassing Aldi in price competitiveness. A comparison of 70 items revealed that the average cost at Lidl was £120.46 in October, slightly lower for Lidl Plus members at £120.38. In contrast, the same shopping list at Aldi averaged £121. Which? analysis showed that Aldi has claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket 22 times in the last 24 months.

For Tesco shoppers, the total cost for the same items last month was £134.89, reduced to £133.38 with a Clubcard. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s shoppers would have paid £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card. It’s worth noting that Aldi and Lidl were not included in Which?’s comparison of 187 items due to their narrower product ranges compared to other supermarkets.
