Paris Fashion Week has concluded, but London’s own fashion extravaganza has just kicked off, garnering accolades from a renowned designer for its innovative showcase of African-inspired clothing. The event showcased distinct African-themed attire crafted by emerging designers, set to the backdrop of Afrobeat music. Luxury designer Veekee James, a Forbes Under 30 honoree, graced the glamorous show at The InterContinental London, Greenwich over the weekend.

Veekee expressed her delight at the growing recognition of African fashion on a global scale, emphasizing the efforts being made to elevate African creativity in the fashion industry. The event, hosted by RAFT X, featured a runway exhibition, a talent competition akin to X-Factor with a cash prize of £2,000, and networking opportunities for businesses and clients, including the British-Nigerian food company Puff Puff Ministry.

RAFT X, a newly established annual affair celebrating arts, culture, and community, received praise from talent show judge DJ Abass for its role in showcasing and promoting African talent. The winner of the talent show, spoken-word artist Jessica Edgar, known as Poetess Jess, impressed the judges with her performance.

Reflecting on her win, Poetess Jess expressed gratitude for the event organizers and attendees, highlighting the importance of connecting with fellow Black creatives and entrepreneurs. The multicultural event also received positive feedback from radio presenter Tolu Adepegba, who commended the increasing influence of African culture worldwide.

Harvesters UK, the organizing body behind RAFT X, shared its vision of expanding the event to a larger venue next year and attracting more sponsors and brands to support African talent. Pastor Dayo Ogunrombi of Harvesters UK emphasized the event’s role in empowering individuals to showcase their skills and aspirations beyond their spiritual lives.

The future of RAFT X looks promising as it aims to continue its mission of nurturing and promoting African creativity and talent on a global stage.
