Former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett’s guide dog has been honored with a membership at the GMB union. In anticipation of the Trades Union Congress in Brighton, the union has granted Barley, a dedicated Labrador, a membership card bearing the unique number “K900000.”
The GMB MPs’ and Peers’ Staff Branch, which is the largest union branch for political staff in the UK, has warmly welcomed Barley as a new member. This gesture recognizes the vital role that working animals, like Barley, play in assisting numerous individuals across the UK.
GMB has a longstanding tradition of extending union membership to animals that contribute to the workplace. Back in 1979, the union famously accepted Smudge, a cat known for its mousing skills at the People’s Palace in Glasgow, following a request from grateful colleagues.
Lisa Gillmore, Senior Parliamentary Researcher and President of GMB MPs’ and Peers’ Staff Branch, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the significant contributions of working animals in Britain. She expressed enthusiasm for Barley’s membership and assured support in case he encounters any paw-related issues.
Barley expressed delight in receiving his membership card and treats, knowing that contributions are being made to Guide Dogs from his branch. As the first working animal member of the branch, Barley extended an invitation to fellow guide dogs, Jennie and Nancy, to consider joining as well to collectively support others in their work.
When inquired if Larry, the famous No.10 cat, would be eligible to join, a GMB spokesperson humorously mentioned the possibility of assisting Larry with a cat flap campaign if requested.
