“Lord Dubs Urges UK Govt to End Gaza Family Separation”

Must Read

Lord Alf Dubs, a Labour peer who escaped the Nazis as a child, is urging the Government to reconsider regulations that are causing separation among Gazan families. In a letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, Lord Dubs is advocating for students to have the freedom to bring their spouses and children when studying in the UK. He emphasizes the dilemma faced by students who are torn between family unity and educational opportunities.

As a former child refugee who arrived in the UK in 1939 through the Kindertransport rescue mission, Lord Dubs speaks from personal experience about the hardships of family separation due to immigration rules. He highlights the emotional toll on children who were brought to safety without their parents, with many never reuniting with their families.

Acknowledging the UK government’s support for fully funded education for Gaza students at UK universities, Lord Dubs commends them for investing in the future leaders of Gaza. However, he criticizes the current policy that prohibits students from bringing their dependents, even when they can demonstrate financial stability. This situation forces students like Manar, offered a funded PhD at Glasgow University, and Loay, accepted for a funded Masters at Oxford University, to make heart-wrenching choices between their academic aspirations and their loved ones.

Lord Dubs emphasizes that the number of affected individuals is relatively small, with fewer than 25 children and spouses facing separation. Nevertheless, he stresses that the long-term impact of dividing families is profound and lasting. Recently, 34 Palestinian students successfully arrived in the UK for their studies after being evacuated from Gaza, marking a significant milestone since 2023.
