Motorists are experiencing significant delays for several more hours as lane closures persist on a major motorway impacting travelers heading to Gatwick Airport.

The M23 was closed in both directions between Junction 8 for Redhill, where it connects with the M25, and Junction 9 for Gatwick Airport. However, the northbound carriageway has since reopened, and two lanes on the southbound carriageway have also been reopened according to National Highways.

Drivers have faced travel chaos on the M23 and surrounding roads due to a police-led incident. Surrey Police responded to a safety concern on the M23 between junctions 8 and 9 early in the morning without disclosing further details.

The National Highways has warned of continued congestion due to the police incident, potentially lasting until 7 pm. While progress has been made with the northbound carriageway fully open and two lanes cleared southbound, two lanes between Junctions 8 and 9 remain closed for ongoing work by National Highways contractors.

The ongoing strike action on the London Underground has further exacerbated the motorway situation today, impacting those traveling via the Gatwick Express. Passengers are advised to expect increased congestion and delays.

Gatwick Airport recommends allowing extra time for journeys due to the M23 closure, which National Highways expects to persist for several more hours while Surrey Police conduct an investigation.

Meanwhile, emergency services are still present at the M23 northbound following an earlier incident, causing delays of up to 30 minutes on the M25.

Inrix highlights significant congestion on both sides of the M25 and diversion routes, advising road users to anticipate delays. Images illustrate backed-up traffic and police presence at the scene, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Drivers heading to Gatwick Airport are advised to avoid the M23 near Junctions 8 and 9 due to the closure stemming from a safety concern incident. Surrey Police continue to investigate, urging people to steer clear of the area. Social media posts reflect frustration over long waiting times and uncertainty about the situation.

National Highways confirms ongoing closures on the M23 and anticipates extended delays for motorists, particularly on the northbound carriageway. Travelers are encouraged to follow diversion signs and expect delays when navigating the affected routes.
