A man was tragically killed by being shot with 13 bullets after a confrontation where he challenged his attacker to shoot him.
Tyrone de Shun Childs Jr, 21, has been named as the suspect in the murder of Jermaine Jabaar Typray Baker, 35, who was shot at close range in Minneapolis, a city facing a surge in criminal activities. Childs allegedly proceeded to search through Baker’s possessions after the shooting, which occurred around 2am on August 27 on Hennepin Avenue.
Reportedly, Childs initially attempted to rob Baker, who defiantly responded, “You’ll have to shoot me.” Subsequently, Childs fired 13 shots, including some while Baker was on the ground. After going through Baker’s belongings, Childs allegedly walked away calmly into a woman’s residence, with whom he shares a child.
Crystal Henry-Smith, Baker’s mother, expressed the family’s desire for justice, as Childs faces second-degree murder charges. Minneapolis police mentioned another individual was injured in the incident but provided no further details.
Childs faces charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. The charges state that Childs shot Baker 13 times during a robbery and looted his belongings post-mortem.
The entire sequence of events, including the murder and robbery, was captured on extensive surveillance footage. After the incident, Childs reportedly changed clothes at his child’s mother’s residence and left in a vehicle. Another person was also wounded in the shooting.
In recent violence in Minneapolis, eight individuals were injured, with four in critical condition, in a shooting at a homeless camp on private property on September 15. Earlier, five people were injured in another shooting near a transit station a few blocks away.
Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse were fatally shot in their home, while another state legislator and his wife were also victims of gun violence on the same day in June. Additionally, a mass shooting at a Minneapolis church in late August claimed the lives of two children and left 21 others injured.
