Sky and Virgin Media TV subscribers will soon see a reduction in available channels starting tomorrow, including popular music offerings. The decision to discontinue several MTV stations, such as MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live, was initially made public in October. The latest TV schedules confirm that these iconic channels will cease broadcasting on December 31.
Users checking the program guide on their television screens will be greeted with a message indicating that the particular channel is no longer in service.
The shift towards streaming platforms is being cited as the primary reason behind this change. With a declining viewership on traditional TV, many individuals are now turning to online platforms like YouTube and apps such as TikTok for their music entertainment needs.
According to sources cited by The Sun, MTV has fallen victim to the surging popularity of streaming services. The demise of the music television giant is being mourned by industry insiders who view it as a significant loss.
Reports suggest that MTV services in certain regions, including parts of Asia, Australia, and Latin America, are also facing discontinuation.
Despite the closure of music-focused channels, MTV HD will continue to be available for viewers. The channel will continue airing reality shows like Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.
MTV has had a profound impact on youth culture and the music industry since its inception in 1981, revolutionizing the consumption, marketing, and visualization of music.
The changes are not limited to MTV alone. Four children’s TV channels – Pop, Tiny Pop, Pop+1, and Tiny Pop+1 – are also scheduled for permanent closure by the end of the year.
In total, nine channels are set to disappear from the Sky and Virgin Media TV lineup.
