“Nescafé’s Frothy Coffees: Behind the Scenes in Cumbria”

Must Read

Nescafé’s frothy coffees are a popular choice, whether you prefer a classic cappuccino or a caramel latte. What many may not know is that these beloved beverages are produced in Cumbria, just over the border. Nestlé established a factory in Dalston near Carlisle in 1962, initially focusing on powdered and condensed milk production. In 1992, the factory expanded to include cappuccino mixes, and by 2018, it was manufacturing a wide variety of Nescafé frothy coffees and Coffee Mate.

The milk used in these coffees is sourced locally from Dolphenby Farm, situated only 20 miles away. Jonny Slack, a 36-year-old manager at Dolphenby along with his colleague Robert Craig, emphasized Nestlé’s role as a global company that also supports local employment. Jonny’s journey in agriculture began at 16 as a cowman, eventually leading him to become a stakeholder at Dolphenby, where he resides with his family.

Dolphenby is affiliated with First Milk, a British farmer-owned dairy co-operative that holds a B Corp certification, signifying its commitment to high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency. Sustainability and regenerative agriculture are key focuses for First Milk, reflecting its dedication to responsible business practices.

The farm’s regenerative farming approach underscores its emphasis on soil health and biodiversity, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers. The favorable grass-growing conditions in the area contribute to Dolphenby’s success, as noted by Robert. The strong partnership between First Milk and Nestlé has been instrumental in supporting the farm’s development over the past two decades.

Robert, who hails from a farming lineage spanning generations, highlights the enduring connection of his family to agriculture. From his grandfather’s dairy farming roots in Sussex to their current operation in Cumbria, the farm has evolved significantly, with around 1,500 cows across three sites and a diverse team involved in its operations.
