“Nine Million Pensioners to Get Winter Heating Bill Help”

Must Read

Nine million pensioners are set to receive assistance with their winter heating bills starting in November. The Department of Work and Pensions has provided further information on the upcoming Winter Fuel Payments program for this year, following a significant policy reversal by the government due to widespread criticism.

Approximately 80% of pensioners in England and Wales will now be eligible for support, with recipients slated to receive notification letters in October or November indicating their entitlement of either £200 or £300 per household. The majority will automatically receive the payment between November and December without the need for an application process.

It is essential for individuals to be cautious of fraudulent schemes offering false links and contact numbers for claiming the payment. Remember, no application is required for eligible recipients. In the event that the Winter Fuel Payment is not received by January next year, a claim can be made before March 31, 2026, by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment helpline at 0800 731 0160.

While all pensioners will receive the payment, those earning over £35,000 annually will have the amount deducted. Individuals exceeding this income threshold can choose to opt out before the September 15 deadline; otherwise, the sum will be reclaimed through the tax system.

For individuals under PAYE, including those with private pensions, HMRC will collect the payment by adjusting their tax code unless they have already submitted a self-assessment tax return. In such cases, the Winter Fuel Payment will be included in their taxable income, beginning with the 2025 to 2026 tax return due by January 31, 2027.

To qualify for the winter fuel payment, at least one household member must have been born before September 22, 1959, and reside in England or Wales. Those over State Pension age can receive £200 towards their bills, while individuals over 80 are eligible for £300, with both amounts applicable per household.

Recipients of Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance will have one person receive the entire Winter Fuel Payment for the household. The payment is calculated on a per household basis, and if an individual’s income exceeds £35,000, only their portion will be subject to recovery.

In cases where a couple both qualify for the payment but one partner’s income surpasses £35,000, only the higher earner will forfeit the payment, while the other will receive a reduced amount. Pensions minister Torsten Bell emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting pensioners, highlighting the increase in the yearly state pension by £1,900 during this parliamentary term.
