“Octopus and OVO Offer Free Electric Blankets to Help Vulnerable Households”

Must Read

Energy providers like Octopus and OVO are offering complimentary electric blankets to households in need. Electric blankets are designed with insulated wires that generate heat when connected to power, providing a cost-effective alternative to central heating. Octopus customers facing financial challenges can access free electric blankets through the Octo Assist program, part of a £40 million support initiative. Eligibility typically requires struggling with energy bill payments or being classified as a vulnerable consumer, such as the elderly, households with young children, or individuals with health issues.

In addition to electric blankets, eligible individuals may receive support like grants to clear energy debts, flexible payment plans, or payment breaks. Applications can be submitted online via the Octopus website. OVO Energy is also providing assistance through its Extra Support Package, a £56 million support scheme offering not only free energy-saving products like electric blankets and smart sockets but also potential home upgrades ranging from loft insulation to new boilers. Support is targeted at households experiencing financial difficulties, with options for payment plans and emergency credit for those in need. Applications can be made online through the OVO website.

Recent increases in energy bills have seen the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual fuel household rise from £1,720 to £1,755 for those paying by direct debit. This price cap will remain effective until December 31, subject to subsequent updates. Consumers on standard variable rate tariffs are covered by the Ofgem price cap unless they are on fixed-rate deals. While there is a cap on charges for gas and electricity units, the total cost of energy is determined by individual consumption levels. The price cap also applies to standing charges, fixed daily fees for access to the energy network, providing an estimate of annual costs based on assumed average household energy consumption levels.
