Premier League Teams Join Forces with Government to Support Unemployed Youths

Premier League teams are engaging with government officials to back youth centers and aid unemployed youths in finding jobs.

New head of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Pat McFadden, is set to reveal strategies today in conjunction with top clubs to address the increasing number of young individuals not engaged in education or employment.

The new Secretary for Work and Pensions will introduce a £25 million initiative to double the quantity of youth centers to over 200 sites, including facilities at football clubs and libraries. These centers offer individuals aged 18 to 21 with assistance in crafting CVs and career direction.

The DWP announced that all Premier League clubs are presently in discussions with the government to host a youth center. Additionally, Mr. McFadden is scheduled to finalize an agreement today with the English Football League and Rugby Football League to become partners.

Recent data indicates that approximately 948,000 young people between 16 and 24 years old were classified as NEETs – not in education, employment, or training in the period from April to June 2025. This marked a 24,000 increase from the previous quarter, according to official statistics.

Mr. McFadden, who will be visiting Crystal Palace Football Club today, stated, “The number of young people not in education, employment, or training is unacceptably high, and this government will not stand idly by while so many are deprived of their potential and our nation of its future.”

“Through our £25 million expansion of Youth Hubs and collaborations with the Premier League and other key organizations, we are creating tangible opportunities for the next generation, ensuring that support is directed to those most in need.”

Clare Sumner, chief policy and social impact officer at the Premier League, commented, “The Premier League is delighted to endorse the enlargement of Youth Hubs so that young individuals, regardless of their background, can access the opportunities, support, and motivation they deserve.”

“Between 2022 and 2025, the Premier League has invested £1.6 billion in broader football and communities, aiding individuals of all age groups who require assistance the most and generating more prospects for young people to acquire knowledge and develop.”

“By collaborating with the Government on the Youth Guarantee, we can build upon this groundwork and ensure that youth hubs provide even more opportunities to help young people flourish.”

She further added, “Together, we are demonstrating how football transcends being merely a sport, reaching out to those most in need of assistance, assisting them in realizing their potential, and fortifying communities nationwide.”
