One of Vladimir Putin’s most trusted advisors has cautioned the leader that failing to consider the use of nuclear weapons in Europe would be a grave mistake. Sergei Karaganov, also known as Professor Doomsday, serves as the honorary chairman of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defence Policy. The 73-year-old asserts that deploying tactical atomic weapons is the only way to avert a larger conflict between the US and Russia.
Karaganov’s statements come amidst a rising chorus within Putin’s inner circle advocating for nuclear actions. Vladimir Solovyov, a prominent TV propagandist, who similarly supports nuclear strikes, made provocative remarks on his nightly show, suggesting bombing prestigious British universities like Oxford and Cambridge to undermine the British elite.
The escalating rhetoric coincides with Donald Trump’s provocations towards Russia, mocking the country as a “paper tiger” incapable of defeating Ukraine after years of conflict. Karaganov emphasized that while using nuclear weapons is a grave sin, refraining from their use and risking a major war would be an even greater sin.
Karaganov portrayed a narrative of Russia feeling threatened by Europe, urging Putin to confront this perceived challenge. He stated that the primary goal in the conflict with Europe and the West in Ukraine is to weaken Europe’s power. He advocated for abandoning outdated notions that a nuclear war is unwinnable, asserting that under extreme circumstances, a nuclear war can be victorious, though undesirable.
In a twisted rationale, Karaganov suggested that a nuclear conflict in Europe could avert a larger, more catastrophic war between Russia and the US. He emphasized the need to break the will of European elites, aiming to pave the way for what he termed as the resurgence of “normal, healthy forces” in Europe.
Karaganov also called for the readiness to take decisive actions, including the potential use of nuclear weapons, to deter Europe. Solovyov, on Kremlin-funded state TV, criticized Britain’s ruling elite, questioning the true power holders and proposing drastic measures like bombing Oxford and Cambridge to address governance issues in the UK.
