A man who engaged in intimidating and malicious behavior towards his former partner, including breaking into her residence, vandalizing her property, and causing her distress, has evaded imprisonment. Marcus Sprawling’s relentless harassment of the woman, which involved damaging her belongings and invading her privacy, culminated in his guilty plea to stalking charges.
The ordeal, which spanned from October 15 to November 7, 2020, left the victim feeling fearful and unsafe in her own home in Sheerness. Despite warnings and attempts to deter him, Sprawling persisted in his destructive actions, leading to a sense of extreme unease for the woman who resorted to enhancing her security measures.
During the sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court, it was revealed that the couple had previously been in a relationship and worked together before separating. Even after returning the house key, Sprawling continued accessing the property without permission. The victim repeatedly encountered the aftermath of his vandalism, causing her distress and suspicion.
Sprawling’s destructive spree, costing approximately £1,500, came to a halt only after the locks were changed, but his unwanted advances persisted. The victim received unwelcome gifts and unsettling messages, further unsettling her peace of mind. His relentless pursuit and intrusion into her life left her anxious and distressed, prompting her to implement additional security measures.
Despite Sprawling’s subsequent positive life changes, including abstaining from alcohol, getting married, and becoming a father, the judge emphasized the lasting impact of his actions on the victim. Acknowledging Sprawling’s remorse and improved behavior, the judge opted to suspend a two-year prison sentence for two years. As part of the sentence, Sprawling was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, pay £2,000 in compensation, and adhere to a 10-year restraining order.
