“Rising Costs Drive Surge in Abandoned Large Dogs”

Must Read

Owners of large dogs are facing emotional farewells to their beloved pets due to the soaring costs of food and veterinary care. Rescue centers are struggling as the number of abandoned pets in urgent need of assistance continues to rise. Breeders are finding it challenging to sell dogs in a shrinking market amidst escalating expenses.

One animal shelter has reported a significant increase in the intake of dogs, including a seven-year-old St. Bernard named Oasis. Sylvia Van Atta, 65, who operates the charity Many Tears near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, revealed that owners and even veterinarians are distressed over the possibility of dogs being euthanized.

Van Atta emphasized the financial strain on owners, noting that the shelter has taken in 247 dogs, with a substantial portion being large breeds like St. Bernards, Labradors, and Newfoundlands. The costs of maintaining these big dogs, with their hearty appetites, can amount to £30 per week for food alone, along with significant veterinary expenses running into thousands of pounds.

Amidst this crisis, Sylvia is appealing for foster caregivers to provide temporary homes for these dogs until permanent placements can be secured. She highlighted the gentle nature of these animals and their potential as wonderful companions for suitable owners.

Statistics from the RSPCA indicate that larger dogs typically take over 60 days to find new homes, compared to around 30 days for smaller breeds. The financial pressures faced by families are resulting in a surge of pet abandonments.

A recent study revealed that 78% of pet owners anticipate financial challenges impacting their ability to care for their animals, with 68% expressing concerns about rising costs. Additionally, one in five pet owners is worried about affording food for their pets amidst the current economic uncertainties.
