Pleas from King Charles and the Princess of Wales urging individuals with cancer concerns to seek medical assistance have caused a strain on the NHS, according to a coroner.
Senior coroner Samantha Goward stated that the healthcare system is facing challenges due to a surge in new cancer diagnoses following public announcements by celebrities, including prominent members of the royal family.
In a recent report, Goward highlighted significant delays in waiting times attributed to high-profile figures disclosing their cancer diagnoses, leading to increased pressure on the NHS.
The concern was raised during the investigation into the death of 83-year-old Michael Moore, who passed away from bladder cancer last year after experiencing delays in receiving a diagnosis and treatment.
While it remains uncertain whether expedited diagnosis and treatment could have impacted Moore’s outcome, Goward expressed worries about potential similar delays affecting others in the future.
Goward emphasized that despite efforts by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust to address delays, a recent decline was partly due to a rise in referrals prompted by celebrities advocating for early detection of cancer symptoms.
The growing number of cancer referrals has overwhelmed the NHS, causing significant delays in various stages of cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment, affecting patients awaiting medical attention.
Notable public figures, including King Charles and the Princess of Wales, have openly shared their experiences with cancer treatment in recent times, prompting an increase in referrals to healthcare facilities.
Following the announcement of King Charles’s cancer diagnosis, hospital officials anticipated a surge in referrals and prepared for heightened activity in response to the news.
Goward’s report has been forwarded to NHS England executives, who are expected to address the concerns raised by November 6.
