“Royal Mail Approved to Reduce Second Class Deliveries”

Royal Mail has received approval to implement a significant alteration to its second class postal service effective immediately. Ofcom has granted permission for Royal Mail to discontinue Saturday deliveries for second class post. Additionally, Royal Mail will only deliver second class post on alternate weekdays instead of the previous six days a week schedule.

This change, which has already been piloted in select areas following the announcement earlier this year, aims to enhance operational efficiency. Despite the revised service frequency, Royal Mail is committed to maintaining a target delivery timeline of three working days for second class letters.

Ofcom estimates that reducing second class deliveries will result in substantial cost savings for Royal Mail, ranging between £250 million and £425 million. The decision is also influenced by the declining volume of letters being sent to UK households, dropping from 20 billion two decades ago to 6.6 billion presently.

Natalie Black, Ofcom’s Group Director for Networks and Communications, emphasized the necessity of these changes for the postal service’s sustainability and customer satisfaction. She highlighted the importance of Royal Mail effectively implementing these reforms and ensuring transparency with customers regarding the benefits of the new service structure.

In response to concerns about rising stamp prices, Ofcom plans to conduct a public consultation on affordability next year. This move aligns with ongoing efforts to address consumer needs and market dynamics in the postal service sector.

Royal Mail’s decision to adjust its service offerings comes amid recent price hikes for first and second class stamps, attributed to the evolving postal landscape with fewer letters being circulated. Martin Seidenberg, group chief executive of Royal Mail’s parent company, International Distribution Services, expressed optimism about the changes, asserting that they align with customer preferences and modern mail delivery practices.

The adjustment in service frequency for second class post is part of Royal Mail’s strategy to deliver a reliable, efficient, and financially sustainable universal service. While stamp prices have increased multiple times in recent years, Royal Mail continues to adapt its services to meet evolving consumer demands and market conditions.
