South Park creators are facing backlash following accusations that the show targeted Charlie Kirk in an episode broadcast prior to his tragic death. Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing influencer, was fatally shot during a conservative students’ rally at Utah Valley University. President Donald Trump expressed sorrow and outrage over the “heinous assassination,” labeling it a dark moment for the country.
In the lead-up to the incident, South Park had parodied key figures in the ‘MAGA’ movement, including Kirk, who was humorously depicted in an episode named ‘Got a Nut.’ The episode, now removed from streaming services, featured character Eric Cartman mimicking Kirk’s style of debating on college campuses, prompting a response from Kirk himself.
Despite Kirk’s positive reception of the parody prior to his death, some of his supporters criticized South Park’s creators for allegedly vilifying him. Calls for the show’s cancellation emerged on social media, with users expressing mixed opinions on the situation. However, defenders of South Park pointed out that there was no proven connection between the show and the tragic event, emphasizing Kirk’s initial amusement with the parody.
