Keir Starmer criticized Donald Trump’s recent accusation that London Mayor Sadiq Khan is pushing for Sharia Law as “absurd.” The US President made disparaging remarks about Mr. Khan, claiming that London’s leaders are advocating for Sharia Law, despite no such intentions from the Mayor. Mr. Khan, in response, condemned Trump’s comments as “racist” and “Islamophobic.”
In an interview with ITV London, Keir Starmer defended Mayor Khan, describing him as a “decent individual.” Trump’s verbal assault on Mr. Khan occurred during the UN General Assembly following his second state visit to the UK.
Starmer stated, “Although there are areas of agreement between the President and me, this issue is one where we differ. The notion of Sharia Law being introduced is baseless. Sadiq Khan is an effective leader who is actively combating serious crime.”
When asked about Khan’s accusations of Trump being sexist, racist, and Islamophobic, Starmer refrained from engaging in a verbal dispute, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the two nations while expressing admiration for London and its Mayor.
During a lengthy speech, Trump criticized London’s mayor, labeling him as “terrible” and claiming the city has drastically changed. In response, Khan highlighted Trump’s fixation on him, questioning why the President focuses on a Muslim mayor leading a diverse and successful city.
Khan concluded by asserting, “President Trump’s actions demonstrate his racism, sexism, misogyny, and Islamophobia.”
