Keir Starmer expressed his appreciation for Angela Rayner during his first address to MPs following her resignation. In a gathering with Labour MPs, the Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges Rayner faced the previous week. Several MPs also commended her efforts.
In an effort to galvanize MPs after a tumultuous week, Starmer emphasized the need to push for change in the country, criticizing Reform UK as “plastic patriots.” He lauded his new team after a significant reshuffle and thanked the entire Labour Party, including those who stepped down from the frontbench in the past year.
Looking ahead to his upcoming Cabinet meeting with the revamped top team, Starmer highlighted the importance of growth in the next phase of the Government, focusing on delivery. He urged MPs to advocate for initiatives such as building houses, improving transport infrastructure, and maximizing opportunities for young children based on their abilities.
During the meeting, Starmer condemned those whose politics revolve around grievances, specifically referencing Nigel Farage’s actions in the US. He criticized Reform UK as “plastic patriots” and highlighted the drawbacks of opposing green infrastructure and NATO membership.
Starmer also assured MPs that the Employment Rights Bill will proceed as planned, addressing concerns raised by union leaders. He discussed the urgency of tackling illegal crossings in the English Channel, dismantling criminal gangs, and shutting down asylum hotels to address community concerns.
The Labour Party initiated a rapid six-week contest to select a new deputy leader following Rayner’s resignation, with MPs vying for nominations. The National Executive Committee (NEC) agreed that a new deputy leader should be appointed by October 25.
