Many households consider washing-up liquids essential purchases for maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen. These products are designed to effectively remove food residues and dirt while also providing antibacterial properties to ensure dishes and utensils are hygienic. However, with the rising prices of well-known brands, I decided to explore the efficacy and affordability of own-brand washing-up liquids available in various supermarkets.
Conducting a comparative analysis, I tested own-brand washing-up liquids from popular supermarkets like Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Marks and Spencer. Each product was evaluated based on its foaming ability, cleaning performance, and overall cost-effectiveness.
The evaluation revealed interesting findings. For instance, the washing-up liquid from Lidl, while pleasantly scented, lacked adequate foaming, which is crucial for efficient cleaning. Despite this drawback, its affordability makes it a reasonable choice for consumers.
Score: 5/10
Another product, though not visually appealing, demonstrated good cleaning performance and a pleasant fragrance, earning it a respectable score of 8/10. However, some extra soaking may be required for tougher stains.
In contrast, Marks and Spencer’s washing-up liquid, despite its efficient foaming and cleaning abilities, fell short of expectations due to its higher price point, indicating better alternatives in terms of value for money.
Score: 5/10
Surprisingly, the comparison between Fairy and supermarket own-brand washing-up liquids revealed no noticeable performance differences, highlighting the effectiveness of these more affordable alternatives. Sainsbury’s own-brand product emerged as a top performer, excelling in cleaning capabilities and overall value for money.
Score: 10/10
Similarly, Tesco’s washing-up liquid proved to be on par with Sainsbury’s in terms of performance and pricing, offering consumers a comparable choice. The evaluation suggested trying both products to determine personal preferences.
Score: 10/10
Despite a price increase over the years, Asda’s washing-up liquid remains a budget-friendly option, although it may not foam as well as some competitors. Nevertheless, its overall performance makes it a viable choice for everyday use.
In contrast, Waitrose’s washing-up liquid, while effective, may be too strongly scented for some consumers’ preferences. Although a decent product, its higher price point and overpowering fragrance may deter cost-conscious consumers.
