Survey Reveals Young Adults Eager to Leave Hometown

Nearly half of young adults who still reside in their hometown are eager to leave due to feeling constrained in reaching their full potential, a survey of 1,000 individuals aged 18 to 30 has revealed. Of those who remain in their childhood city, half express a strong desire to relocate. A significant 32% believe that staying in their current urban environment hinders their ability to achieve their aspirations, with 26% seeking to move in pursuit of their life’s purpose.

Moreover, 31% of respondents feel they have outgrown their hometown, while 23% feel that it suppresses their creativity. The study, conducted by Reebok in collaboration with MTV for the My City, My Sound video series, also identified popular destinations for potential moves, with London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Liverpool topping the list, along with cities such as Glasgow, Bristol, Leeds, and Oxford being considered appealing places to live.

Among those who have already departed from their hometown, 44% were eager to leave, highlighting a common sentiment of longing for a change. Josephine Walters, Reebok’s senior director, emphasized the profound impact of one’s living environment on personal growth, stating that the inspiration drawn from a city plays a vital role in decision-making and self-development.

The research further indicated that 28% of young adults who relocated did so for better career prospects, while 24% felt they had outgrown their hometown. Additionally, 17% expressed a sense of unfulfilled potential in their previous location. Interestingly, one in five individuals would consider returning to their hometown, while half of those who have moved away believe they timed their departure perfectly.

Furthermore, cultural influences were found to significantly impact creativity, with 26% of respondents agreeing that cultural factors, location, and living environment drive creative expression. Nearly 18% appreciate the cultural richness of their current residence, whether in their hometown or elsewhere. A notable 42% acknowledged that their living environment stimulates their creativity, and 59% believe that the place where you live can help uncover your life’s purpose.
