“Travelodge Explores Self-Service Hotels Amid Expansion Plans”

Must Read

Travelodge, a budget hotel chain, is considering expanding the concept of self-service hotels. Recently, the company introduced its first “hybrid” hotel where guests can check-in and access their room using a mobile app, eliminating the need for face-to-face interaction with staff.

This innovative approach allows guests to retrieve amenities like an ironing board from designated storage areas without assistance. Following the success of a fully contactless Travelodge in St Albans, Hertfordshire, a new 395-room StaySmart hotel in London offers both self-check-in kiosks and traditional manned front desks.

Travelodge’s CEO, Jo Boydell, reported that more than two-thirds of guests have opted for the self-service option, citing a preference for avoiding check-in queues. The positive feedback has prompted the company to consider expanding this model to additional locations.

Boydell highlighted the growing popularity of self-serve solutions in other industries, such as supermarkets and airports, to support the hotel’s contactless experience. While specific staffing details for these new-style hotels were not disclosed, Travelodge aims to streamline operations to offset a decline in profits due to increased costs and reduced demand.

Despite facing financial challenges, recent events like Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell concert in Birmingham and performances by Oasis and Coldplay have positively impacted revenue. To enhance customer convenience, Travelodge has introduced a “Buy Now, Pay Later” payment option with promising initial results.

Additionally, the hotel chain is pursuing a significant expansion initiative, with plans to open nine more hotels by 2025. However, potential future developments may be influenced by impending government reforms on business rates, which could elevate property expenses.

In conclusion, Travelodge remains vigilant about potential cost escalations and is committed to adapting its strategies to meet evolving market demands and operational challenges.
