UK Emergency Alert Test to Disrupt Sporting Events

Must Read

On Sunday afternoon, UK sporting events will face disruptions as the Government conducts an emergency alert test. Phones across the country will emit a loud siren sound at 3pm, involving approximately 87 million devices. This test, the first since April 2023, aims to ensure effective communication during crises, as seen during past events like Storm Darragh and Storm Eowyn.

The emergency alert test is crucial for assessing its functionality during emergencies such as floods or storms. It will reach all 4G and 5G network users in the UK, emphasizing the importance of saving lives in real emergencies. The test, according to Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, plays a vital role in keeping the nation safe during critical situations.

The alert will last about ten seconds and will be audible even on phones set to vibrate or silent mode. While the alert will clarify that it is only a test and no immediate action is needed, phones in airplane mode or turned off will not receive it initially. However, upon reconnecting to the network, the alert may still be received shortly after as it broadcasts from specific phone masts to all devices within range, including tourists or non-UK numbers.

Notably, the emergency alert test will impact the England white-ball cricket team’s match against South Africa at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, scheduled to start at 11 am. The game will pause at 3pm to ensure players are not distracted by the alert sound. Similarly, the Rugby Super League derby between Hull KR and Hull FC and the Old Firm game involving Celtic Women and Rangers Women will experience slight delays to avoid the alert.

Additionally, the Great North Run is anticipated to conclude before the sirens sound, minimizing disruptions for participants. These measures are essential to test and ensure the effectiveness of the emergency alert system in safeguarding lives during critical situations.
