A UK expatriate who had settled in Dubai has recently returned to the United Kingdom after enduring demanding 80-hour workweeks, citing the lack of work-life balance in the vibrant city despite its increasing popularity among Britons. Natalie Goodall, now 32, first ventured to Dubai at 18 for a golf coaching opportunity following her internships at a local golf school.
Initially, Natalie embraced the chance, residing with friends and family before establishing her own residence in Damac Hills. She enjoyed several years in the opulent city, now home to notable figures like Amir Khan and The Beckhams. Despite The Telegraph reporting a rising number of Britons relocating to Dubai – from 30,000 in 2021 to 35,000 in 2022 and 40,000 in 2023 – Natalie found the city’s lifestyle overwhelming due to the lack of work-life balance.
After enduring relentless 80-hour workweeks for years, Natalie decided to return to the UK in 2019, settling in West Parley, Dorset. While she cherished her time in Dubai and expressed a willingness to visit again, she remains hesitant about a permanent move back.
Amid a surge of Britons seeking a luxurious lifestyle and constant entertainment in Dubai, Natalie cautions that high expectations may lead to disappointment. As a self-employed PGA professional now, Natalie reflects on her time in Dubai, acknowledging the city’s allure but emphasizing the challenges of maintaining a balanced life due to its business model.
Natalie’s journey in Dubai began with work placements at a golf academy at 18, leading to a permanent coaching role as she pursued her Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) qualification. Over time, she transitioned from shared accommodations to renting her own flat, enjoying her limited free time exploring Dubai’s attractions and beaches.
Despite the appealing lifestyle, Natalie found it challenging to sustain in Dubai due to high living costs and demanding work hours. Eventually, she decided to return to the UK in 2019, securing a coaching position in Guernsey. Natalie’s move was also influenced by her boyfriend, Will Coan, who relocated back to the UK after completing his work contract in Dubai.
Now settled in West Parley, Natalie contemplates only visiting Dubai where her parents still reside, as a permanent return would require a substantial salary offer. She cautions individuals considering a move to Dubai to manage their expectations realistically, as the glamorous facade may not align with the practical realities of life in the city.
