Supermarkets in the UK have issued an urgent recall for a popular breakfast cereal due to the presence of an ingredient that could trigger severe allergic reactions. Food safety regulators have issued a “do not eat” alert for Spoon Cereals’ Cinnamon and Pecan Granola, which is sold at Waitrose, Ocado, and Morrisons. The cereal may contain peanuts and oats, posing a risk to individuals with peanut or gluten allergies or intolerances.
The manufacturer, Spoon Cereals, has announced a recall of its 400g packets of the affected cereal with batch code M5244 and specific best before dates, including May 22, 2026, and May 26, 2026. The company explained that a mispackaging error by a co-packer led to some products potentially containing peanuts and gluten, posing a health risk to those with related allergies or intolerances.
Customers who are affected are advised not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further information, individuals are encouraged to contact Spoon Cereals via email. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that the company has issued point-of-sale notices to inform customers about the recall and provide guidance on what to do if they have purchased the product.
Coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition affecting around one in 100 people, prevents individuals from digesting gluten, resulting in a range of symptoms from rashes to severe complications. Peanut allergies, affecting around one in 50 children and one in 200 adults in the UK, are among the most severe food allergies, potentially causing dangerous symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, and dizziness.
Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the affected product should seek immediate medical assistance. Approximately 6% of UK adults have confirmed food allergies, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in managing allergies to prevent adverse reactions.
