US Principal Fired for Showing Michelangelo’s David, Outrage in Italy

Must Read

Italians were surprised by the dismissal of a US principal for displaying Michelangelo’s sculpture David to students, following complaints from parents deeming it inappropriate. Hope Carrasquilla, who recently took over as principal at Tallahassee Classical School in Florida, was let go after objections from three parents regarding the content of an art class.

The art lesson included Renaissance artworks such as “David,” “Creation of Adam,” and “Birth of Venus,” which showcase nude figures. Carrasquilla was given an ultimatum by the school’s board chair, Barney Bishop, to resign or face termination.

The decision sparked outrage in Italy, where Michelangelo’s David is housed, with locals expressing confusion and anger over the situation. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella criticized the incident as “ridiculous” and invited the teacher to Florence for recognition, emphasizing the importance of art education.

Social media users and officials condemned the board’s action, with a cartoon in an Italian newspaper depicting David with his genitals covered, symbolizing shame. Carrasquilla responded positively to the invitation to Florence, expressing gratitude and interest in visiting the city.

The director of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where the David is displayed, expressed disbelief at the controversy, stating that considering David as pornographic reflects a lack of understanding of biblical, Western cultural, and Renaissance art context.

In response to the school incident, the board introduced a new policy mandating parental notification two weeks prior to any potentially contentious curriculum. Some parents expressed frustration over communication issues and teacher turnover. Chairman Barney Bishop defended the decision, citing parental rights to be informed about controversial topics taught in schools.
