Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a new email scam circulating in the UK. This fraudulent email targets individuals affected by the recent discontinuation of O2’s 3G mobile platform. Despite most customers not being impacted by the transition to faster 4G and 5G services, scammers are taking advantage of the situation.
The deceptive email, claiming to be from Virgin Media O2, prompts users to upgrade their SIM card for a purportedly enhanced network experience. The message, designed with official branding, carries the subject line “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.”
Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these emails are not legitimate and should be deleted without clicking on any links or responding. Recipients are urged to report any suspicious emails to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This phishing scam aims to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive personal information. In some cases, scammers may even send a SIM card via courier and request users to activate it with a PIN. The email may also instruct recipients to log in to the O2 app using a provided password and includes a “Contact Us” button that could connect victims directly to the fraudsters.
If successful, scammers could potentially access private accounts, gather personal data for illicit purposes, or lead to identity theft. To safeguard against such threats, individuals are advised to verify the authenticity of emails from service providers before taking any action. Seeking guidance from trusted sources or contacting the company directly using official channels is recommended in case of uncertainty.
