Britons planning a trip to a popular vacation spot have received a cautionary message about inappropriate behavior, indicated by a peculiar sign that has been put up.
Albufeira, a beloved tourist destination in Portugal, is frequented by UK travelers seeking sun and sand. However, local residents seem displeased with the conduct of some visitors. A sign has been erected at Santa Eulalia beach instructing visitors not to utilize the beach as a restroom. The beach holds a Blue Flag designation, signifying its adherence to high safety and quality standards.
The sign displays a stern message in Portuguese, “Nao urinar,” translating to “don’t urinate” in English, followed by a directive in English stating “No poop and pee.” This action follows complaints from Spanish beach establishments regarding the absence of British tourists.
Featuring imagery of a man urinating and another defecating with a crossed-out red line, the sign does not explicitly target British tourists but seems to address issues with foreign visitors due to the inclusion of English text.
The presence of this sign has shocked holidaymakers, with one individual expressing disbelief at the need for such a warning. Despite finding it unusual, the presence of the sign suggests that past incidents of inappropriate behavior have prompted its installation.
Portugal attracts around two million British holidaymakers annually, with a significant portion heading to the Algarve region where Albufeira is situated. Additionally, there are approximately 45,000 UK expatriates residing in the area.
Albufeira has taken a stand against ill-mannered tourists by imposing substantial fines. Local authorities have approved penalty charges of up to €4,000 (£3,375) for holidaymakers who violate a newly established code of conduct emphasizing good behavior.
The initiative to crack down on unruly behavior was initially announced by Albufeira’s mayor in February, with the enforcement of fines becoming a reality in June after being published in an official bulletin. The regulations target various offenses, including entering businesses shirtless, wearing beach attire in unauthorized areas, and engaging in public indecency.
Violations such as public nudity or lewd behavior could result in fines ranging from €2,000 (£1,685) to €4,000 (£3,375), while businesses failing to enforce dress codes may also face financial penalties under the stringent rules.
