As the current academic year kicks off, numerous students are embracing a new educational experience that encompasses not just learning but also nutrition and growth.
In a groundbreaking move, the Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools program is revolutionizing the way children engage with healthy eating at schools with high rates of free meal provision. By distributing millions of servings of nutritious food, this initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.
Ark Putney Academy in southwest London is among the schools benefiting from this program. Actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé recently visited the school, delighting students with a hands-on lesson on the importance of consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
Babatunde, a father of two, expressed his excitement at witnessing the children’s enthusiasm for healthy foods during the interactive session. The kids eagerly participated in activities like chopping pineapples, devouring mangoes, munching on carrots, and peeling oranges, showcasing their genuine interest in nutritious eating habits.
Launched in 2024, the Fruit & Veg for Schools initiative provided over 10.8 million portions of fresh produce to 411 schools in its inaugural year. This year, the program has been expanded to include more than 500 schools, ensuring that each student receives a daily serving of fruits or vegetables.
Feedback from last year’s participants revealed remarkable results, with 94% of surveyed teachers noting improved classroom behavior, heightened focus, increased energy levels, and enhanced conduct among students. Furthermore, all teachers unanimously agreed that Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools has had a positive impact on the lives of the young individuals it has reached.
Babatunde emphasized the satiating and energizing effects of consuming fruits and vegetables, drawing from his childhood experiences with healthy eating promoted by his mother, a former school cook. He highlighted the program’s educational aspect, teaching students the nutritional benefits of various fruits and vegetables to encourage informed choices.
The assortment of items available through the program includes bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be incorporated into breakfast clubs or utilized in healthy snack options. Tesco’s broader initiative, Stronger Starts, complements this effort by providing essential resources to support children’s well-being and development.
By combining nutrition education with practical food provision, the Fruit & Veg for Schools program aims to instill healthy habits in students while fostering confidence and purpose. Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad commended the program’s positive impact on children in disadvantaged communities and expressed the company’s commitment to expanding access to fresh produce.
With an increasing number of schools embracing this initiative, Tesco is sowing the seeds for a healthier future by promoting greater consumption of fruits and vegetables among young learners.
