In December 2022, a man was hunting deer near Portal Hunting Club in Georgia when he stumbled upon what he initially thought was a dead hog in a ditch. To his shock, upon closer inspection, he discovered the decapitated and limbless torso of a woman and immediately contacted emergency services.
Upon arrival, the police secured the area and discovered a knife, a storage box containing blood, clothing, and a severed leg within a three-mile radius. The location was designated a crime scene, prompting the commencement of a thorough investigation.
In the following days, additional body parts, including a buried head, were unearthed, painting a grim picture of the victim’s fate as her body had been left to decompose and be scavenged by animals.
The woman, believed to have been murdered a few weeks prior, proved challenging to identify for law enforcement. Despite releasing a composite sketch to the public and comparing it to missing person reports, no leads emerged. As a last resort, authorities enlisted the assistance of a specialized DNA genealogy testing lab, resulting in the victim’s identification in May 2023 as 40-year-old Mindi Mebane Kassotis.
Mindi resided 50 miles away from the crime scene in Savannah, Georgia, with her husband, Nicholas Kassotis, a 40-year-old ex-Navy judge advocate general who had transitioned to a software company role post-military service.
When informed of his wife’s demise, Kassotis claimed prior knowledge but could not explain her presence in the woodland. He proceeded to weave an elaborate narrative involving a mysterious figure named “Jim McIntyre” who allegedly warned the couple of impending danger related to Kassotis’ job, leading to their constant relocation under McIntyre’s guidance.
Kassotis further alleged that Mindi, purportedly pregnant, visited an undisclosed medical facility due to blood pressure issues, but he was barred from seeing her for safety reasons as dictated by McIntyre. Subsequently, Kassotis claimed he received news of Mindi’s death from a stroke via encrypted messages, preventing him from verifying her demise in person.
Subsequent investigations debunked McIntyre’s existence, disproved Mindi’s pregnancy, unveiled Kassotis’ $1.5 million debt to his first wife, and exposed his subsequent name change to Nicholas Stark. Shockingly, Kassotis had entered a new marriage with Samantha Kolesnik while Mindi was still alive, eventually leading to his arrest and indictment on charges including murder, aggravated assault, and evidence tampering.
During the trial, Kassotis maintained his fabricated narrative involving McIntyre and his alleged innocence in Mindi’s murder. However, the prosecution highlighted his deceitful actions, infidelity, and the brutal nature of Mindi’s injuries, resulting in his conviction and sentencing to life imprisonment without parole, plus an additional 25 years.
Mindi’s family condemned Kassotis as a sociopath and psychopath, expressing their enduring grief and emphasizing his lack of remorse. The presiding judge characterized Kassotis’ actions as a web of lies culminating in a heinous act that shattered Mindi’s aspirations and trust in her perpetrator, concluding that she lived her final days in fear unbeknownst to the real threat posed by her supposed protector.
