“UN Experts: Israel Engaged in Genocidal Acts in Gaza”

Must Read

The conflict in Gaza began with an incursion by Hamas-led militants into the southern region of Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties, primarily civilians, and the abduction of 251 individuals. Currently, 48 hostages, with less than half believed to be alive, are still held in Gaza.

Gaza’s Hamas-controlled health ministry reports that over 64,964 individuals have lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza since the conflict’s onset. The vast majority of residences are estimated to be either damaged or completely destroyed. Critical infrastructure such as healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene systems have collapsed, leading to a famine declaration in Gaza City by UN-supported food security experts.

An independent panel of experts appointed by the United Nations’ Human Rights Council has determined that Israel is engaged in genocidal activities in Gaza. The experts identified evidence of four out of the five genocidal acts recognized under international law, including targeted killings, causing severe physical or mental harm, deliberately creating conditions for destruction, and impeding reproduction.

While the panel was appointed by the Human Rights Council, representing the UN’s top human rights entity, it does not speak on behalf of the entire United Nations. Israel has strongly refuted the report, labeling it as distorted and untrue.

For the innocent civilians caught in the conflict’s crossfire, the situation transcends politics, religion, or vengeance. They find themselves thrust into a harrowing struggle for survival, witnessing unspeakable atrocities and experiencing the loss of loved ones firsthand.

Mandy Blackman, 56, who oversees a field hospital in al-Mawasi within Gaza for UK-Med, shares the grim realities of working on the frontline in a poignant account. She describes heart-wrenching scenes of emaciated children trying to rouse deceased parents, desperate parents seeking aid for their malnourished children, and the influx of gunshot victims with life-altering injuries.

The narrative paints a stark picture of the ongoing trauma and devastation faced by the people of Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the conflict to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
