An ex-boyfriend, consumed by obsession, tormented his former partner through controlling actions, including using a drone for surveillance. Dominic Williams, 33, employed a tracking device to monitor his ex-girlfriend, with whom he had an on-and-off relationship spanning about 12 years. Additionally, Williams deliberately damaged clothes he disapproved of, as revealed in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.
Despite the relationship ending a year prior, Williams persistently refused to acknowledge its conclusion and resorted to sending intimidating messages suggesting he was monitoring her activities. Only on the day of the trial did he plead guilty. Consequently, he received a suspended 12-month prison sentence, two years of probation, 20 days of rehabilitation, and 80 hours of community service. Williams was also instructed to pay £400 in prosecution costs and a £187 victim services surcharge.
During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Millie Evans highlighted the tumultuous nature of the relationship, citing Williams’ controlling and demeaning conduct towards his former partner. She recounted instances of verbal abuse, threats of violence, and destruction of property inflicted by Williams, emphasizing the victim’s distressing experiences.
In a detailed account, Ms. Evans disclosed that Williams had gone to extreme lengths to monitor and manipulate his ex-girlfriend, including secretly obtaining access to her property and installing tracking devices. Williams also subjected the victim to explicit and unwelcome images, falsely insinuating they were of her.
The victim, profoundly affected by Williams’ actions, expressed feeling fear and anxiety, detailing how his relentless harassment had taken a toll on her mental and physical well-being. She described enduring emotional turmoil and a sense of captivity due to his intrusive behavior.
Williams, residing on Bideford Road in Llanrumney, pleaded guilty to charges of coercive and controlling behavior spanning from April 2023 to June 2025. Despite his claims of innocence regarding stalking accusations, the court found him culpable of intentionally causing fear and distress to his former partner over an extended period.
In sentencing, Presiding Justice Lisa Gerson characterized the case as particularly distressing, noting Williams’ deliberate efforts to instill fear and suffering in the victim. The court took into consideration his minimal prior criminal record but emphasized the severity of his coercive actions.
As the legal proceedings unfolded, disruptions from individuals supporting Williams were observed in the courtroom, with one individual making derogatory remarks towards the victim. The court clerk intervened to maintain decorum, emphasizing the seriousness of the case and the need for respectful conduct.
The verdict handed down by the magistrates underscored the gravity of Williams’ actions and the lasting impact on the victim. The court’s decision aimed to hold him accountable for his coercive behavior and to provide justice for the victim affected by his relentless harassment and control tactics.
