“Asda Sales Drop 7% Despite Efforts to Boost Competitiveness”

Must Read

Asda, a major supermarket chain, faced a 7% decline in sales, adding to its ongoing challenges. Market analysts from NielsenIQ reported a drop in Asda’s market share from 12.2% to 10.9% in the last quarter.

Following its acquisition by billionaire brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa and TDR Capital in 2021, Asda has been striving to improve its performance. Under the leadership of executive chairman Allan Leighton, the grocer aimed to implement significant price reductions, marking the largest in 25 years, to attract more customers and enhance competitiveness against rivals like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.

Despite these efforts, recent data from NielsenIQ revealed a sharp sales decrease for Asda compared to its competitors. While Asda saw a decline, Tesco and Sainsbury’s experienced sales growth of 4.5% and 5.2% respectively. Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, also posed a threat to Asda with a market share of 10.3%.

An Asda spokesperson acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in the company’s strategy to enhance customer offerings and affordability. The spokesperson highlighted improvements in availability both online and in stores and emphasized the commitment to maintaining competitive pricing.

In a bid to boost customer engagement, Asda launched a Christmas advertising campaign featuring The Grinch. Market forecast by NielsenIQ suggested a significant spending trend on Christmas groceries, with households expected to spend £20 billion, peaking at £5.7 billion next week.

Mike Watkins of NielsenIQ noted that consumers are seeking affordable options this holiday season, showing cautious spending habits to allocate budgets for special treats and family indulgences in December.
