“Jaguar Land Rover Cyber Attack Halts Production”

Must Read

Jaguar Land Rover faced a cyber attack that disrupted parts of its IT system, leading to a phased restart. The company is working on resolving a backlog of payments to suppliers affected by the cyber incident that occurred at the end of August. Production has been halted, and the carmaker has delayed the resumption date several times, now aiming for October 1 at the earliest.

JLR has reported progress in restoring sections of its digital infrastructure, allowing dealerships to service vehicles and expedite sales. Government officials, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves, are closely collaborating with Jaguar Land Rover and its supply chain partners to support recovery efforts. The National Cyber Security Centre is actively involved in addressing the cyber attack aftermath.

Discussions are ongoing regarding potential support for JLR’s suppliers, as some have already initiated layoffs or advised employees to seek benefits. Various proposals, such as government intervention in purchasing and reselling stock, have been considered, though concerns about feasibility exist. Sir Andy Street has cautioned against such risks and suggested providing cash loans to suppliers instead.

Reports indicate that JLR did not have insurance coverage for cyber attacks, potentially leading to significant financial losses estimated at around £120 million due to the production shutdown. The company has temporarily ceased operations at its manufacturing facilities in Halewood, Solihull, and Wolverhampton, impacting the daily production of over 1,000 cars.

The situation underscores the challenges faced by JLR and its supply chain due to the cyber attack, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to mitigate the impact on operations and finances.
