A mother from Georgia has admitted guilt in a murder case involving her eight-year-old daughter in 2021, as confirmed by authorities on Wednesday. Brittany Hall, aged 31, received a life sentence for felony murder, 11 counts of child cruelty, concealing a death, and making false statements, according to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.
Together with her partner Celeste Owens, who was previously convicted of 20 counts and sentenced to life plus 235 years, Hall subjected her three children to abuse, resulting in the death of one child. The deceased child’s malnourished body was later found in nearby woods.
The district attorney’s office disclosed that Hall and Owens reported the disappearance of Amari Hall, the eight-year-old, on November 19, 2021. The couple claimed that the child had gone missing from the hotel room where they were staying with Hall’s three children while they were asleep.
Authorities became suspicious of the couple’s account after discovering evidence of child mistreatment. CCTV footage from the hotel room showed the couple assaulting all three children. Additionally, unsettling internet searches were found on Owens’ phone, including queries related to child behavior, local lakes, sewer systems, missing children, and U-Haul services.
Further investigations revealed CCTV footage of Owens renting a U-Haul truck and driving it to DeKalb County, where the child’s body was eventually located. Medical examiners testified during Owens’ trial, highlighting severe abuse on the victim, who weighed only 54 pounds at the time of death and showed signs of physical trauma, including a lacerated liver.
Dr. Jamie Downs, during the trial, mentioned that external force caused fatal injuries to Amari. Crime scene investigator Kia Jimenez described the grim details of how the child’s body was found, wrapped in plastic bags with visible injuries.
Owens was found guilty on multiple charges, including murder, battery, assault, and child cruelty. The case’s severity was emphasized by Sabrina Nizam, the deputy chief assistant district attorney, who called it the worst child-related case she had encountered.
Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed disappointment in Hall’s failure to protect her children and her participation in the abuse. The authorities hope for healing for the surviving siblings and extended family following the tragic events.
