Following a surge in arrests during a pro-Palestine march in London, the government is considering tighter measures to address offensive chanting at protests. Keir Starmer suggested that additional restrictions might be necessary to curb disruptive demonstrations.
Shabana Mahmood recently proposed granting police new authority to prevent repetitive protests in the same location, in response to the large number of arrests made at the recent march.
Despite Prime Minister’s disapproval of holding demonstrations on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks, protestors persisted. Keir Starmer, while en route to Mumbai, expressed the need to address the cumulative impact of protests. He emphasized the importance of exploring broader powers available to address the situation, particularly focusing on the offensive chants heard at protests.
Starmer highlighted the ongoing discussions with the Jewish community regarding these issues. The government is engaged in a review to assess the effectiveness of current powers and the need for potential enhancements.
