“Government Plans Crackdown on Vape and Cigarette Sales”

Must Read

The government is planning to restrict the sale of vapes and cigarettes to only licensed shops in an effort to crack down on unauthorized sellers. Additionally, officials are evaluating the flavors and ingredients of vapes to deter youth from initiating the habit. These measures aim to address the current loophole allowing any business to sell tobacco and vapes, leading to the easy availability of illicit products to minors.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock emphasized the importance of closing this legal gap by introducing a licensing requirement for retailers selling tobacco, vapes, and nicotine products. The proposed regulations seek to safeguard children by identifying and penalizing rogue traders operating in communities while ensuring consumers can easily distinguish legitimate retailers.

The government is also soliciting expert opinions on vape flavors, nicotine levels, and product appearance as part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which aims to create a smoke-free generation and deter young people from developing lifelong addictions. Under the new proposals, individuals selling without a license could face substantial fines or immediate penalties.

Recent research from King’s College London and University College London suggests that implementing plain packaging for vapes could reduce underage vaping. The study revealed that when presented with branded packaging and flavors, 53% of surveyed children aged 11 to 18 expressed interest in trying vapes, a number that dropped to 38% with plain packaging and flavor descriptions.
