Russian Submarine in Med Alert: Fuel Hazard Detected

Must Read

A Russian submarine capable of carrying nuclear weapons has raised a significant alert in the Mediterranean Sea. The Novorossiysk submarine of the Black Sea Fleet has indicated the presence of an “explosive hazard” on board, reportedly due to serious technical issues, including a fuel leakage. Reports suggest the crew may have to release the fuel mixture into the sea as a necessary measure.

The exact location of the incident within the Mediterranean remains unknown. According to a Russian Telegram channel, the Novorossiysk is currently on combat duty in the region but is facing challenges in repairing the fuel system due to a lack of spare parts and qualified personnel. The accumulated fuel poses an explosive risk, potentially forcing the crew to discharge it into the sea.

While the submarine is designed to carry nuclear-capable missiles, it is unlikely to be on such a mission at present, but it remains armed. Official statements regarding the submarine’s distress or any additional reports are yet to be released. The vessel, with a crew of 52 and the ability to submerge for 45 days, was monitored by Royal Navy patrols and aircraft as it traversed the North Sea and English Channel earlier in July.

In early August, the submarine was observed passing through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean. The Telegram channel, known for divulging information on Russian security matters, did not provide further specifics on the Novorossiysk, which was commissioned in 2014. While part of the Black Sea Fleet, the submarine is not believed to be involved in the conflict with Ukraine, which alleges sinking a similar vessel in August 2024.
