Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning of potential power outages in Moscow in response to Russia’s threats to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply infrastructure. Russia had previously launched attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities during winter, leading to power grid shutdowns in some regions. Reports indicate that Russia is considering a similar approach again, prompting Zelensky to declare that Ukraine would retaliate by targeting Moscow in case of any blackout threats.
Zelensky emphasized that civilized nations do not initiate conflicts but are not weak either. He highlighted the need to maintain strength without displaying vulnerability. Last winter, Russia reportedly targeted multiple thermal and hydropower plants in Ukraine, resulting in widespread blackouts. Recent events, including an attack on a thermal power facility in Kyiv Oblast, suggest that Ukraine is at risk of further assaults on its energy infrastructure.
Despite preparations for potential attacks, Ukraine faces challenges in defending against drone and missile strikes due to inadequate air defenses. The front line in Ukraine has expanded to almost 800 miles, straining Kyiv’s defenses, while Russian forces have adopted a strategy of deploying small assault groups to breach Ukrainian lines. Ukrainian forces engage in numerous daily combat operations against Russia’s larger army, with the line of contact extending by approximately 120 miles in the past year.
US President Donald Trump, who has been unsuccessful in mediating the conflict, expressed belief that Ukraine has the capability to reclaim lost territories from Russia, amounting to about 20% of its land. The situation remains tense as both countries navigate escalating tensions and military confrontations.
