Model and actress Coco Austin has defended her choice to breastfeed her daughter until the age of six. Coco, who is also a dancer and fashion designer, explained that she and her daughter, Chanel, viewed breastfeeding as a bonding experience and wanted to let Chanel decide when to stop. While speaking on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, the 46-year-old model emphasized that breastfeeding was not about providing nourishment but rather about closeness and comfort for Chanel. Coco acknowledged that the extended breastfeeding period might seem unusual to some, particularly in American culture, but highlighted that in Europe, breastfeeding until seven is not uncommon.
Despite facing criticism online for her decision, Coco remained resolute, stating that she received significant support from fans and fellow mothers. She expressed gratitude for the positive feedback she received, noting that many people appreciated her openness about breastfeeding. Coco also pointed out that breastfeeding beyond the first year, as endorsed by the NHS, can offer continued benefits for both mother and child. The NHS website encourages mothers to breastfeed into the second year and beyond, alongside introducing other foods.
In a similar vein, Jane McNeice, 49, who received backlash for breastfeeding her grandchildren, defended her actions and shared that she had actually received praise for her choice. This reaffirms the diverse perspectives and experiences surrounding extended breastfeeding practices.
