“Norovirus Outbreak Aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship”

Must Read

A Royal Caribbean cruise turned into a distressing situation for over 90 passengers due to an outbreak of highly contagious norovirus. The incident occurred aboard the Royal Caribbean International vessel, Serenade of the Seas, and was promptly reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among the 1,874 passengers on the ship, 94 individuals have reported falling ill during the voyage, along with four out of 883 crew members.

Norovirus symptoms, as outlined by the CDC, include diarrhea, vomiting, muscle aches, headaches, abdominal cramps, fever, and three or more loose stools within a 24-hour timeframe. The ship commenced its journey from San Diego on September 19, making stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia, with Miami set as its final destination on Thursday.

In response to the outbreak, Royal Caribbean has enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols in line with their outbreak prevention and response plan, according to the CDC. Affected individuals have provided stool samples for testing, and both passengers and staff displaying symptoms have been isolated. The cruise ship has also sought guidance from the Vessel Sanitation Program, overseen by the CDC, regarding sanitation procedures and reporting ill cases.

Royal Caribbean Group emphasized its commitment to the health and safety of guests, crew, and visited communities, stating that they uphold stringent cleaning measures exceeding public health standards. The CDC reported a total of 19 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships this year, with 14 attributed to norovirus. While the recent increase in cruise ship outbreaks is noted, it remains uncertain if this marks a new trend post-pandemic.

The Serenade of the Seas, as described by Royal Caribbean, offers expansive views and a plethora of onboard activities. Despite the recent norovirus incident, the cruise ship boasts various amenities for passengers to enjoy, including mini-golf, sunbathing, and diverse culinary experiences. The vessel ensures a vibrant onboard experience with entertainment options like musicals, dancing, and themed parties.

This norovirus outbreak follows similar incidents on previous Royal Caribbean cruises, highlighting the challenges posed by the highly contagious virus. Norovirus, known for causing stomach-related symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, has affected multiple cruise ships in recent years, necessitating stringent preventive measures and swift responses to safeguard the health of passengers and crew members alike.
