Counterterrorism authorities are currently probing the actions of Jihad Al-Shamie, who is suspected of sending death threats to a Member of Parliament due to the MP’s stance on Israel. The MP in question, John Howell, reportedly received menacing emails after expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
One email, signed by a person named “Jihad Alshamie,” contained a chilling message stating, “It is people like you who deserve to die.” However, it remains uncertain whether this individual is the same person responsible for the attack. John Howell, a former MP for Henley from 2008 to 2024, was provided with police protection and removed his local office details from public access.
Following the incident, Mr. Howell addressed the threat, emphasizing the gravity of such messages by stating, “The last thing I want is to seem dramatic, but when a threat suggests, ‘I would like to see you dead,’ it must be taken seriously. It’s not just about me; it involves my family and staff. All it takes is one misguided individual with dangerous intentions to act upon it.”
Commending Thames Valley Police for their security advice, Mr. Howell mentioned the availability of police support during his public engagements if he feels unsafe. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that Al-Shamie was not actively under investigation by counterterrorism units or security services, nor had he been referred to Prevent.
Jihad Al-Shamie was fatally shot by law enforcement after carrying out an assault on a synagogue in Manchester, resulting in the deaths of two individuals in what authorities have labeled a terrorist incident. The attack occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall.
