Legal organizations have accused members of the Conservative and Reform parties of using “irresponsible and dangerous” language that is endangering lawyers. In an extraordinary move, six legal groups representing 250,000 lawyers have expressed serious concerns about the rhetoric directed at legal professionals simply for carrying out their duties.
The controversy arose following a peculiar Tory conference speech by Robert Jenrick, where he theatrically displayed a judge’s wig, proclaiming his stance against allowing any political activists to masquerade as legal professionals. This move drew criticism from the Government, denouncing Jenrick for jeopardizing “British values” by threatening to undermine the institutions that uphold the nation.
Jenrick also vowed to abolish the independent body responsible for formulating guidelines for judges and magistrates in England and Wales, citing its inadequacy. Additionally, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has repeatedly criticized what she refers to as “activist lawyers.”
Allegations of a two-tier justice system have been repeatedly made by the Tories and Reform UK. Consequently, major legal bodies such as the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Law Society of England and Wales, and others have issued a joint statement expressing alarm over the threats directed at them and their families.
In their statement to the Sunday Mirror, these organizations emphasized the importance of respecting the judiciary’s independence and the critical role of lawyers in providing impartial representation. They condemned politically motivated attacks on the legal profession, highlighting the detrimental impact on public trust in the rule of law and the foundations of justice.
The legal community has faced alarming incidents of violence, death threats, and harassment, with some even experiencing threats against their families. The rising intimidation towards those upholding the justice system and democratic principles has sparked deep concern among legal professionals.
In a firm declaration, these groups clarified that lawyers represent their clients and are not synonymous with them. They reminded politicians that justice must prevail for everyone, emphasizing that no one is exempt from the law’s protection.
