Digital veteran ID cards are now accessible on smartphones starting today. Approximately two million veterans will have the capability to download these cards using an official government app, simplifying the process of proving their veteran status.
This initiative will facilitate easier access to benefits for military veterans, including housing support, discounts at various establishments, and the ability to register their service history with healthcare providers for tailored medical care.
While the digital cards are optional, veterans will still have the option to obtain physical cards if desired. This marks the Government’s debut in launching digital ID cards, with plans for a trial run of digital driving licenses expected later this year.
In a related move, Keir Starmer recently proposed mandatory digital ID cards to address illegal migration concerns. However, apprehensions have been raised regarding data privacy and civil liberties.
Ian Murray, the minister for digital government, highlighted the veterans ID cards as a potential model for demonstrating the functionality of such credentials and addressing public apprehensions.
The veterans card can be accessed through the GOV.UK One Login app, an existing platform used for identity verification when accessing government services. Although discussions about the GOV.UK wallet have been ongoing, the full rollout is anticipated to coincide with the development of additional digital credentials, such as digital driving licenses.
The groundwork for a digital wallet has already been laid within the One Login app, meeting stringent security standards across government entities.
Initially, the veterans card can only be utilized in physical settings, such as museums for discounted entry, but online usage is expected to be enabled in the near future.
Liz Kendall, the Technology Secretary, emphasized the importance of supporting veterans by streamlining access to public services through the digital veterans’ card, aiming to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and enhance service accessibility.
