A recent report suggests that children who qualify for free school meals should be enrolled automatically to ensure that no hungry kids miss out on the support. The Education Policy Institute (EPI) researchers have proposed a comprehensive review of the system to guarantee that the government’s initiative to provide free hot lunches is effectively implemented.
The EPI has recommended the establishment of a centralized automatic enrollment system for free school meals (FSM) nationwide to decrease the number of eligible children not benefiting from free meals and related assistance. They emphasized the need for sufficient resources for FSM in early education and urged the removal of eligibility criteria for preschoolers regarding meals before and after lunch.
Additionally, the EPI highlighted the necessity to simplify the registration process for children from families without access to public funds to address concerns that applying for FSM could impact their immigration status. Notably, Keir Starmer announced plans to extend free school meals to all children from families receiving Universal Credit in England, potentially making half a million more children eligible for free lunches by September 2026.
The Mirror is actively advocating for free school meals for all primary school children. Various stakeholders, including Paul Whiteman from the school leaders’ union NAHT and Caroline Voaden, the Liberal Democrat schools spokesperson, have supported the call for streamlining the system to ensure that families in need receive the necessary support.
Dr. Tammy Campbell from the EPI emphasized the importance of targeting funding towards the most vulnerable children. Ruth Maisey, the program head for education at the Nuffield Foundation, stressed the need for a more nuanced approach to identifying and supporting disadvantaged families beyond those eligible for Free School Meals.
In response, a Department for Education spokesperson highlighted the government’s commitment to providing free school meals to all children from households claiming Universal Credit and improving the eligibility checking service to facilitate claiming free meals. They expressed readiness to collaborate with the education sector to review broader funding for disadvantaged groups.
