Danny Seagren, known as the pioneer live-action Spider-Man and a former Sesame Street puppeteer, has passed away at 81, as confirmed by his family. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Seagren made history as the first actor to bring Spider-Man to life on television through The Electric Company.
In addition to his roles as a writer, dancer, and producer, Seagren also worked alongside Muppets creator Jim Henson as a puppeteer and puppet maker. His journey as Spider-Man began in 1974 when he seized the opportunity during his time with The Muppets after hearing that The Electric Company was searching for a Spider-Man actor.
Recounting his unique audition in an interview with Mark Elitz, Seagren described his daring act of climbing on top of a filing cabinet and leaping onto a desk to impress the casting team. This marked the start of his three-year tenure as Spider-Man, which even led to the creation of a Marvel tie-in comic inspired by his portrayal. Moreover, Seagren donned the iconic Big Bird costume for various live shows, events, and parades.
Beyond his Spider-Man and Big Bird roles, Seagren ventured into creating and performing puppet characters for different productions. His notable work includes Who’s Afraid of Opera alongside Joan Sullivan and Miss Peach, earning him a Daytime Emmy award.
Following his illustrious career, Seagren retired to Little River, South Carolina. His family plans to hold a celebration of life in his honor at a later date. Fondly remembered for his iconic portrayals, Seagren cherished engaging with fans at Comic Cons in his later years, leaving a lasting impact on those who admired him.
The legacy of Spider-Man, from its comic book origins to its various adaptations, including the trilogy of live-action films, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Despite initial plans for a sequel in 2011, a reboot was later introduced with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, paving the way for subsequent installments and collaborations with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
