Most key leaders were notably absent from the annual roundtable meeting of northeastern U.S. governors and Canadian premiers, indicating the ongoing cross-border trade war’s impact, according to a political scientist at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). Premiers Tim Houston of Nova Scotia and Rob Lantz of P.E.I. were the primary Canadian representatives at the 47th annual conference of the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers, hosted by Vermont Gov. Phil Scott. Among the six state governors, only Scott attended in person, with the others sending proxies.
Political scientist Don Desserud highlighted that current premiers, who are more focused on seeking practical solutions, may have little interest in such gatherings due to strained relations between the two countries. Notably, New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt stayed in the province to address local priorities, with delegates representing Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and other New England states due to various reasons including upcoming elections and scheduling conflicts.
The conference’s attendance has dwindled in recent years, possibly influenced by the escalating trade war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite the challenges, the importance of maintaining connections between Canadian and U.S. leaders was emphasized by Governor Scott, who acknowledged the strained relationship and emphasized the need for collaboration on shared interests.
During the conference, discussions focused on exploring joint opportunities in clean energy and advanced manufacturing, as well as strategies to enhance energy security and economic growth. Desserud, recognizing the value of participation in such events, emphasized the potential for enhancing inter-provincial and international understanding, even amidst trade tensions. Looking ahead, he noted the importance of sustaining these connections beyond current challenges, envisioning a future where tariffs and trade disputes are no longer the focal point of bilateral relations.
