A potent El Niño event, known as a “super” or “Godzilla” El Niño, has resurfaced in the Pacific Ocean, impacting global weather patterns during a period of widespread heat. North America and Europe just experienced their hottest July on record, leading to numerous heat-related fatalities, dried-up waterways, and extensive wildfires, including over 4.1 million hectares of forest in Canada.
While this intense summer coincides with the return of El Niño, climate scientists clarify that El Niño itself is not solely responsible for these extreme weather events. However, experts suggest that the natural phenomenon could exacerbate the already heightened extreme weather conditions driven by climate change.
According to Josh Willis, a climate scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the impacts of El Niño are expected to be widespread and significant. This El Niño, resembling the potent occurrences of 2015-16 and 1997-98, could have far-reaching effects globally.
El Niños typically occur every few years, altering weather patterns by heating the air above the Pacific Ocean, causing shifts in precipitation distribution. This year’s El Niño, possibly reaching the strength of past major events, could lead to a warmer winter in Canada and the northern U.S., affecting rainfall patterns and snow accumulation.
The warmer climate, attributed to human-induced climate change, has set the stage for a more intense El Niño event. Climate experts anticipate that the repercussions of this El Niño will extend well into 2027, impacting global weather patterns and extreme events for months to come.
